Continuing our countdown of the top 10 Raider Sports stories of the year brings us to #2 today, the SHS Boys Basketball season! The boys finished their season 26-2 with an appearance in the Seymour semi-state. The 26 wins set a school record for wins in a season. The Raiders started the season with 6 straight wins that included a convincing win over the Anderson Indians at their place 73-60. The Raiders then dropped their only game of the regular season the next night to New Palestine in double-overtime 70-67.
The boys then ran off 20 straight wins that included the Henry County Tourney, the sectional at Knightstown where they defeated Eastern Hancock, Knightstown, and Indianapolis Howe and the regional at Greenfield Central where they defeated Heritage Christian and Northeastern. The Raiders then lost to the hottest shooting team they saw all year in Linton-Stockton in the semi-state 73-56.
The Raiders ran their home win streak to 22 games last season, the last loss also coming to New Palestine on December 1, 2017. SHS also captured the Mid-Eastern Conference championship for the 2nd consecutive season (shared with Eastern Hancock in 17-18) and ran their conference record over 2 years to 17-1. The Raiders also set a school record for defense as they gave up a mere 41.9 points per game.
The Raiders lose shooting guard Evan Coers and super-sub Nate Kimball to graduation but return a talented core group led by seniors Peyton Starks and Jackson Campbell. Both played keys roles last season playing in the low post and holding their own against much taller players with their toughness. Colton Monday, another senior, is expected to provide some help in the low post along with junior to be Kameron Graddy.
The Raiders also return a talented trio of juniors in starting guards Andrew Bennett, Jake Kinsey, and Kade McCollough. Any of these three are capable of taking over a game themselves with dead-eye shooting and at different times last season did just that! They will get some help from Jasper Campbell as he enters his sophomore season next winter.
The Raiders added three new schools to the schedule for next season. SHS will travel to Fishers in December and will host Irvington Prep and Pendleton Heights after Christmas. The Raiders will also be in a different sectional next season…..a sectional that includes Northeastern, Union County, Hagerstown, Centerville, Lincoln, Eastern Hancock, and Knightstown.
