The Shenandoah Lady Raiders Varsity Basketball team earned their first victory of the 2016-17 season with a 51-28 victory over the Union Rockets (1-1).
Shenandoah (1-3) jumped out to the early 5-0 lead after Candy Chandler and Morgaen McWilliams connected on successful field goals in the opening 90 seconds of the game. Union added a field goal with Hillery Shepherd then scoring her first points of the game. The Raiders held a 7-5 lead after the first quarter.
Chandler added five points with McWilliams contributing a field goal in the second quarter to increase the Raiders lead to 14-7. Shenandoah’s defense then came up big holding the Rockets to just three more points in the final four minutes of the half. Shenandoah added 11 points in the closing moments of the quarter with scoring coming from McWilliams, Chandler and Canaday. At halftime, Shenandoah led Union by a margin of 25-10.
Union began the third quarter with scoring seven of the next nine points to close the gap to 27-17. The Raiders then finished the third quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 37-19 lead to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Rockets went on another run to open the quarter, scoring the initial five points to pull within 37-25. Shenandoah then finished the game on a 14-3 run to win by the final of 51-28.
Alex Canady led the Raiders with 14 points with Candy Chandler pouring in 13. Other players to score included Morgaen McWilliams (7), Rachel Coers (5), Faith Muterspaugh (4), Hillery Shepherd (4) and Skylar Couceller (4).
The Shenandoah Raiders Junior Varsity and Varsity Basketball teams return to action on Saturday, November 12 at Winchester High School.
